3D Scanning a Ferrari 365 GT4 Engine for Custom Mustang Build

Engine Scan

Project Overview

We were approached by Building the Legend, a specialist in bespoke automotive engineering, to carry out a 3D scan of a Ferrari 365 GT4 V12 engine. Their client had a unique vision: to install this classic Italian powertrain into a Ford Mustang. To make this a reality, detailed and accurate digital data of the engine was essential for design validation and integration.

The Challenge

Scanning a Ferrari V12 engine presents several challenges due to its size, complexity, and the need for complete geometric capture. Accuracy was paramount, particularly as the engine was to be integrated into a completely different chassis platform. Surface accessibility and scanner positioning were also critical to ensuring complete coverage.

Our Approach

To perform the scan we used a Hexagon Romer Absolute Arm fitted with an AS1 laser scanner. Here's how we executed the project:

Scanner Setup: The Romer arm was positioned to access as much of the engine as possible from a single location. We confirmed reach and visibility for optimal scanning.

System Checks: The scanning arm was connected to RDS software on a laptop, and calibration was verified before proceeding.

Project Creation: We launched PolyWorks® to create a dedicated workspace and project file for the client.

Scanning Workflow:

  1. With the scanner connected in PolyWorks®, we began scanning the accessible side of the engine.
  2. Once the first position was completed, we moved the scanner to a second position using the Custom Device Position Move method.
  3. After each scan, the data was checked for completeness and clarity.
  4. Data Alignment: The scans were aligned using data-to-data best fit, and a third position was added using the same method to ensure full coverage.
  5. Post-Processing:
    • Unwanted data was removed.
    • A clean, high-resolution polygonal model was created from the scan data.
    • The final model was exported as an STL file and delivered to the client.

Results

The completed 3D scan provided Building the Legend with an accurate, detailed digital representation of the Ferrari 365 GT4 engine. This data is now being used to simulate fitment and plan custom modifications, helping to ensure a smooth and precise integration into the Mustang.

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how advanced 3D scanning can enable bold, custom engineering projects. By combining high-end scanning technology with a structured, repeatable workflow, we delivered data that supports confident decision-making and precise fabrication. Whether for restoration, reverse engineering, or performance upgrades, our metrology solutions provide the foundation for innovative automotive builds.
